"These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen
them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth."
Hebrews 11:13
The natural tendency of our natures is to put down roots; Establishing a
residence, starting a family, finding stable Employment are all good things but they often divert our minds from the fact that we are just passing through this life.
Many build lavish estates and spend their time amassing Material treasures while neglecting spiritual treasures. In our market- driven society it is easy to develop that attitude.
The patriarchs and saints that are discussed in Hebrews chapter 11 were very nomadic in their outlook on life. They looked for a “City afar off”. A final resting place for their souls where God is the maker and the builder. They endured many trials and in many cases lost their lives for their faith. They did not receive the promise of a heavenly kingdom in their lifetime but knew that they would receive it in the future.
“Pilgrims” speaks of that journey.
